The Youth Engagement Steering Committee provides advice the Minister for Youth on the development of the AYF and its future activities. It also advises the Minister on ways of involving young people who face particular obstacles to participation.

The Youth Engagement Steering Committee consists of eleven young people (six representing youth-led organisations, four individual young people and an ex-officio representative of the national youth peak body, the Australian Youth Affairs Coalition). The Committee represents the diversity of young Australians, from regional and city areas, Indigenous and non-English speaking backgrounds, and from different states and territories. Members of the Steering Committee were aged from 15-24 years at the time of selection. The Committee is selected through an open selection process and was appointed by the Minister for Youth in December 2009
