This 1 year Fellowship will build your 'hands on' experience of running an arts based community project. By giving you a broader understanding of the community cultural development industry, you will fill gaps in your knowledge, expand your industry networks and gain a vocationally relevant qualification.
Mayibuye is offering 14 fellowship places to young people who want to make a difference in their community, along with 5 places to current Mayibuye volunteers. We are looking for people who are passionate, committed and enthusiastic and want to become young change makers. You will participate in an accredited training program, and run a Mayibuye Performance Troupe each week.
2 fellows will be selected to lead each project, the 7 identified regions are:
*Please note applicants do not need to be from these areas, but priority will go to those who are.
Mayibuye Performance Troupes are outreach projects bringing together vulnerable youth from multicultural backgrounds to grow and connect through performing arts and life skills workshops. The groups come together once a week and have various performance opportunities on the weekends. As a fellow you will have the unique opportunity to lead and manage an outreach program, providing you with practical community development and cultural arts experience. This is coupled with professional training and one-on-one mentoring.
Under the guidance of the staff from Mayibuye, The Torch Project and RMIT you will receive accreditation toward a Certificate IV in Community Development for the community arts work you are undertake. You will have access to a leadership camp and four state-wide workshops that will enhance your skills and understanding of the ingredients that go into making a thoughtful, inclusive and enjoyable project.
We are looking for a people with a diverse range of skills, and do not require fellows to be performing artists.
Applicants should only apply if they are able to meet the time commitments. This includes 3 hours a week to run the Mayibuye Performance Troupe, attendance to Mayibuye's leadership camp and the 4 training weekends throughout the year. We understand that fellows may not be able to make all sessions, which is why we have 2 leaders for each project. Please note the camp is compulsory.
Not all fellows will be eligible for the certificate; however will receive recognition for assessments completed. It is also acceptable if fellows do not wish to work towards a Certificate in Community Development and do assessments - we still expect them to attend the training sessions.
