YMCA Youth Parliament is preparing for its 26th consecutive year and it's time for those who want to make a difference to get involved.

For three days in July , the Members of Parliament will hand over the reins - and their desks to 120 young people aged 16-25, who will debate 20 pieces of proposed legislation.

Youth Parliament is an opportunity to voice your opinions in the most public forum of them all - Parliament House!
The YMCA Youth Parliament Program is run by YMCA Victoria in conjunction with the State Government's Office for Youth. With the help of a dedicated Taskforce of past participants, more than 120 young people from across Victoria will debate in the Chambers of Victoria's Parliament House.

You are invited to enter a team of six people to participate in this unique program. With the assistance of an experienced mentor, the team will research and debate a State issue and present it in the form of a Bill in the Parliamentary chambers. After all the Bills have received the assent of the Youth Governor, they are handed to the Premier's office, who in turn distributes them to the relevant ministers and departments of government.

The program culminates in a week-long residential camp, which includes 3 days debate in Parliament House; a formal opening and closing ceremony and a reception hosted by the Governor of Victoria. Away from Parliament House, participants also take part in a series of rewarding and often challenging sessions.

The aims of the YMCA Youth Parliament Program are:

  • To provide a forum for young people to express their views;
  • To provide the State Government with an expression of young people'sconcerns and expectations;

  • To provide a forum for young people to express their views;
  • To provide the State Government with an expression of young people'sconcerns and expectations;

Opportunity Overview:
Aged between 16 to 25? Want to try something new? Got something to say?Want a place to be heard? ...Really heard? 2011 marks the 25th year of Youth Parliament in Victoria. For 25 years, young people have been taking over the chambers of Parliament, debating legislation they've written, on issues important to them.

  • To provide a forum for young people to express their views;
  • To provide the State Government with an expression of young people'sconcerns and expectations;
  • To develop an interest and understanding of Parliamentary history, etiquette andprocedure;• To develop public speaking and presentation skills;
