UN WOMEN AUSTRALIA'S YOUTH DELEGATE TO
THE UNITED NATIONS COMMISSION ON THE STATUS OF WOMEN

UN Women Australia is offering a young woman the opportunity to represent young women from around Australia at the 2012 United Nations Commission on the Status of Women in New York City.

ABOUT UN WOMEN
UN Women is dedicated to gender equality and the empowerment of women. It was launched in early 2011, bringing together UNIFEM and three other organisations within the United Nations. A global champion for women and girls, UN Women was established to accelerate progress on meeting their rights worldwide.
UN Women Australia (formerly UNIFEM Australia) is the National Committee for UN Women in Australia and it committed to supporting UN Women through advocacy, public education and fundraising on global women's issues.
In order to engage young people in gender and development issues, UN Women Australia developed a successful youth network called Young UN Women Australia in 2008. Young UN Women Australia Committees are now based in Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth.

THE COMMISSION ON THE STATUS OF WOMEN
The Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) is a functional commission of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), dedicated exclusively to gender equality and the advancement of women.
Each year, representatives of Member States gather at United Nations Headquarters in New York to evaluate progress on gender equality, identify challenges, set global standards and formulate concrete policies to promote gender equality and advancement of women worldwide. UN Women Australia attends CSW as an ECOSOC Accredited NGO.
The CSW has an annual theme called the Priority Theme which forms the focus of the Commission's work. In 2012, the Priority Theme will be ‘the empowerment of rural women and their role in poverty and hunger eradication, development and current challenges'. It will be held from February 27th till March 9th 2012.

THE YOUTH DELEGATE PROGRAM
Upon being appointed, the Youth Delegate will work closely with UN Women Australia and her local Young UN Women Australia Committee to develop a strategic plan for the position to maximise its impact. The Youth Delegate will work closely with UN Women Australia to ensure this strategic plan is in line with UN Women's priority areas. It is expected that the Youth Delegate will spend a significant amount of time speaking with a diverse range of stakeholders so that they can adequately represent the views of young Australian women at the CSW.
Given the Priority Theme, it is expected that the Youth Delegate would have a focus on engaging young women from regional and remote communities and UN Women Australia welcomes applications for the position from young women who are living in regional and remote communities.
UN Women Australia will brief the Youth Delegate on UN Women's priority areas for the 56th session of CSW prior to traveling to New York.

The Youth Delegate will join the UN Women Australia delegation to CSW, and would play an active role in the Australian delegation which is made up of NGO representatives and government officials.
The Youth Delegate will have the opportunity to co-present a side-event hosted by UN Women Australia on young women and leadership modeling some of the programs in Australia and in our region. In addition to participating in the formal sessions and NGO side-events during CSW, the Youth Delegate would have the opportunity to organize meetings with key UN related organisations, including UN Women, UNDP and UN Youth.

Throughout her time in New York, the Youth Delegate will publish regular blogs through the UN Women Australia website to ensure that her experiences and learnings were shared with other young people in Australia. The Youth Delegate would also be expected to interact with young Australians via Social Media, especially during the CSW.
The Youth Delegate will work with UN Women Australia to profile the role and encourage other countries to work to ensure young women are given leadership opportunities, through informal meetings and advocacy to support other young people attending.

Upon returning home, the Youth Delegate will share her experiences with UN Women Australia and Young UN Women Australia Chapters, and participate in post-CSW events which UN Women Australia holds each year to inform a broader public about the outcomes of the Commission. The Youth Delegate will be expected to share your learnings with other young people through school and university networks. The Youth Delegate will also write a formal report on her experience at CSW which will be shared online on the UN Women Australia website.

The Youth Delegate will be expected to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with UN Women Australia, agreeing to work with UN Women Australia to develop and promote the role, engage with stakeholders and sponsors, share their experience with UN Women Australia and Young UN Women Australia Committees and submit a final report to UN Women Australia.

FUNDING FOR THE ROLE
At this stage, UN Women Australia has not been able to secure financial support to cover the full costs of the program. In 2012, UN Women Australia will offer a $1,750 scholarship to the successful candidate to support some of the costs of attending CSW. This means that the successful candidate will have to self-fund or fundraise approximately $2,000 to meet any additional expenses, including return flights to New York, accommodation and living expenses, and some domestic travel.
UN Women Australia will assist the successful candidate in fundraising for the role.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT FROM US
UN Women Australia is committed to ensuring that the Youth Delegate has a rewarding experience attending the CSW in New York and engaging with UN Women Australia and Young UN Women Australia Committees in the course of the role.
UN Women Australia will support the Youth Delegate's work, providing the successful candidate with a thorough briefing on the workings of CSW and key issues, linking the Delegate with Young UN Women Australia Committees around Australia, sharing contacts and networks and assisting with fundraising.
However it is important to note that the role requires a high level of autonomy and initiative. It is expected that the successful candidate will bring their own ideas, energy and vision to the role, and work in consultation with UN Women Australia to turn their vision into a reality.
