Who is Oaktree

The Oaktree Foundation is an aid and development organisation run by young people under the age of 26. We believe that education is the most powerful force we have to change the world. Oaktree takes action by partnering with developing communities to make educational opportunities reality.
In a world where people often only give token responses to poverty, Oaktree believes that young people can be leaders who don't just talk about change but create it. We believe that the key to making lasting change and breaking the poverty cycle is education. At the core of our work are our projects in developing communities. Oaktree partners with local organisations to provide educational opportunities to young people. Currently we support projects in four countries: East Timor, South Africa, Papua New Guinea and Cambodia. In Australia we support our projects through advocacy, fundraising and volunteer mobilisation.

The story
In 2002, Hugh Evans lived and worked in the rural valley communities of KwaZulul-Natal, South Africa. Here he came to understand that bringing opportunity and hope to the community could only be achieved through a spirit of partnership. In 2003 Hugh and Nicolas Mackay founded The Oaktree Foundation to harness the potential of young people to reduce poverty and empower developing communities through education.
Oaktree grew from young people sitting in living rooms, cafes, school classrooms and church halls throughout Melbourne who were committed to building on this vision. Our first partnership was created with an organisation in South African called Sethani who wanted to build a community resource centre that would provide educational opportunity for 750 orphans and vulnerable children and this success has been replicated many times.

Achievements
Oaktree has had some notable achievements either individually or part of a coalition with other organisations. These include but are not limited to:

  • In Australia, we have more than 85,000 members all of whom are playing their part in the fight to end extreme poverty.
  • We have been internationally recognized through numerous awards for our high impact campaigning and incredible achievements. In 2010, we were awarded the International Youth Leadership Award for MDG action by the United Nations in New York and, in 2007 we were presented with the prestigious ‘Free Your Mind' award at the MTV Music Awards.
  • We were the leaders behind the 2006 MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY Concert in Melbourne, the 2007 MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY ZEROSEVEN Roadtrip, the 2008 End Child Slavery Campaign, and the 2010 MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY Roadtrip.
  • Our revolutionary fundraising and awareness campaign Live Below the Line has raised over $2 million for fighting poverty in under 18 months, is backed by Hugh Jackman, and has been launched internationally in the US and UK through our partners at the Global Poverty Project.
  • We've raised over $3.5 million to provide education to some of the most disadvantaged communities in the world - including building schools in East Timor, teacher training in Papua New Guinea, vocational training for freed slaves in Ghana and HIV/Aids education in South Africa.

Position Details:
Human Resource Management at Oaktree involves leadership, teamwork, recruitment, training of staff and conflict resolution.
The Human Resources Team is integral for advancing the growth of Oaktree SA's volunteer base. This team is responsible for the implementation of important HR practices and strategies to help us attract, recruit, retain, support and value our SA volunteers. The HR Team is responsible for ensuring that all volunteers have the best possible and most fulfilling experience of Oaktree SA. Human Resource Management provides a key link between all the volunteers in the Oaktree community. HR Management fosters and develops relationships between all tiers of the
organisation. The HR team needs to create an environment where people are maintained and developed during their time at Oaktree. The role of the HR team is also implement systems to ensure the sustainability of Oaktree in South Australia.

Job Outline

  • Work with State Human Resource Manager to create an effective and sustainable recruitment strategy for Oaktree SA.
  • Assist HR Manager in organising learning and development sessions for Oaktree volunteers.
  • Assist HR Manager with volunteer inductions.
  • Conduct volunteer interviews where needed.
  • Develop a strong and positive relationship with uni career centres and volunteering organisations to facilitate the recruitment process.
  • Work with HR Manager in the creation and development of a larger HR team.

Key Performance Indicators

  • Sound strategic and operational plan development for the Human Resources team in SA
  • Quality and effectiveness of SA Human Resources activity
  • Attendance at Human Resources team meetings and retreats
  • High quality and professional people processes which ensure volunteers are best placed during their experience in Oaktree
  • Ensure all infrastructure and equipment is effectively managed.
  • Level of Human Resources support provided to other teams within Oaktree SA
  • Feedback from State Human Resource Manager on performance

  • It is expected that you will also play a key role (within your time commitments) to participate within other Oaktree SA programs and projects.
  • Because the position is in the South Australian Team, we are looking for someone in Adelaide.

The Oaktree Foundation is an aid and development organisation run by young people under the age of 26. We believe that education is the most powerful force we have to change the world. Oaktree takes action by partnering with developing communities to make educational opportunities reality.
In a world where people often only give token responses to poverty, Oaktree believes that young people can be leaders who don't just talk about change but create it. We believe that the key to making lasting change and breaking the poverty cycle is education. At the core of our work are our projects in developing communities. Oaktree partners with local organisations to provide educational opportunities to young people. Currently we support projects in four countries: East Timor, South Africa, Papua New Guinea and Cambodia. In Australia we support our projects through advocacy, fundraising and volunteer mobilisation.

The story
In 2002, Hugh Evans lived and worked in the rural valley communities of KwaZulul-Natal, South Africa. Here he came to understand that bringing opportunity and hope to the community could only be achieved through a spirit of partnership. In 2003 Hugh and Nicolas Mackay founded The Oaktree Foundation to harness the potential of young people to reduce poverty and empower developing communities through education.
Oaktree grew from young people sitting in living rooms, cafes, school classrooms and church halls throughout Melbourne who were committed to building on this vision. Our first partnership was created with an organisation in South African called Sethani who wanted to build a community resource centre that would provide educational opportunity for 750 orphans and vulnerable children and this success has been replicated many times.

Achievements
Oaktree has had some notable achievements either individually or part of a coalition with other organisations. These include but are not limited to:

  • In Australia, we have more than 85,000 members all of whom are playing their part in the fight to end extreme poverty.
  • We have been internationally recognized through numerous awards for our high impact campaigning and incredible achievements. In 2010, we were awarded the International Youth Leadership Award for MDG action by the United Nations in New York and, in 2007 we were presented with the prestigious ‘Free Your Mind' award at the MTV Music Awards.
  • We were the leaders behind the 2006 MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY Concert in Melbourne, the 2007 MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY ZEROSEVEN Roadtrip, the 2008 End Child Slavery Campaign, and the 2010 MAKEPOVERTYHISTORY Roadtrip.
  • Our revolutionary fundraising and awareness campaign Live Below the Line has raised over $2 million for fighting poverty in under 18 months, is backed by Hugh Jackman, and has been launched internationally in the US and UK through our partners at the Global Poverty Project.
  • We've raised over $3.5 million to provide education to some of the most disadvantaged communities in the world - including building schools in East Timor, teacher training in Papua New Guinea, vocational training for freed slaves in Ghana and HIV/Aids education in South Africa.

Human Resource Management at Oaktree involves leadership, teamwork, recruitment, training of staff and conflict resolution.
The Human Resources Team is integral for advancing the growth of Oaktree SA's volunteer base. This team is responsible for the implementation of important HR practices and strategies to help us attract, recruit, retain, support and value our SA volunteers. The HR Team is responsible for ensuring that all volunteers have the best possible and most fulfilling experience of Oaktree SA. Human Resource Management provides a key link between all the volunteers in the Oaktree community. HR Management fosters and develops relationships between all tiers of the
organisation. The HR team needs to create an environment where people are maintained and developed during their time at Oaktree. The role of the HR team is also implement systems to ensure the sustainability of Oaktree in South Australia.

Job Outline

  • Work with State Human Resource Manager to create an effective and sustainable recruitment strategy for Oaktree SA.
  • Assist HR Manager in organising learning and development sessions for Oaktree volunteers.
  • Assist HR Manager with volunteer inductions.
  • Conduct volunteer interviews where needed.

  • Work with HR Manager in the creation and development of a larger HR team.
