Who is Oaktree
The Oaktree Foundation is an aid and development organisation run by young people under the age of 26. We believe that education is the most powerful force we have to change the world. Oaktree takes action by partnering with developing communities to make educational opportunities reality.
In a world where people often only give token responses to poverty, Oaktree believes that young people can be leaders who don't just talk about change but create it. We believe that the key to making lasting change and breaking the poverty cycle is education. At the core of our work are our projects in developing communities. Oaktree partners with local organisations to provide educational opportunities to young people. Currently we support projects in four countries: East Timor, South Africa, Papua New Guinea and Cambodia. In Australia we support our projects through advocacy, fundraising and volunteer mobilisation.
The Story
In 2002, Hugh Evans lived and worked in the rural valley communities of KwaZulul-Natal, South Africa. Here he came to understand that bringing opportunity and hope to the community could only be achieved through a spirit of partnership. In 2003 Hugh and Nicolas Mackay founded The Oaktree Foundation to harness the potential of young people to reduce poverty and empower developing communities through education.
Oaktree grew from young people sitting in living rooms, cafes, school classrooms and church halls throughout Melbourne who were committed to building on this vision. Our first partnership was created with an organisation in South African called Sethani who wanted to build a community resource centre that would provide educational opportunity for 750 orphans and vulnerable children and this success has been replicated many times.
Achievements
Oaktree has had some notable achievements either individually or part of a coalition with other organisations. These include but are not limited to:
- In Australia, we have mobilised more than 10,000 supporters, run more than 300 conferences and speaking engagements and reached more than 150,000 people.
- We were the leaders behind the 2006 Make Poverty History Concert in Melbourne, the 2007 Make PovertyHistory Zero Seven Road Trip and the 2008 End Child Slavery Campaign.
- In 2007 the Oaktree Foundation was presented with the prestigious ‘Free Your Mind' award at the MTV Music Awards.
- By now, Oaktree's Schools 4 Schools program has expanded to over 40 schools across Australia, and is one of the largest programs in the country engaging school students on issues of social justice.
- We currently raise over $500,000 annually to support educational projects in developing communities

Live Below The Line
Live Below The Line (www.livebelowtheline.com) is the annual fundraising campaign that challenges participants to eat off the extreme poverty line of AUS $2 for five days in May, raising awareness and funds for anti-poverty initiatives.
Founded in 2010 the campaign has since engaged over 8000 participants and raised over $2 million dollars for Life Changing Anti-poverty initiatives and in 2011 has expanded to both the United Kingdom and the United States of America.
In 2011 over 6000 Australian participants from over 60 workplaces, 80 universities, 90 schools and over 800 teams completed the challenge where more than 78.1% talked to 20 people or more about the campaign and the issues of extreme poverty. Together they raised over 1.4 million dollars for life changing anti poverty initiatives in some of the poorest regions of Southeast Asia including Cambodia, East Timor and PNG.
Live Below The Line also had a substantial impact in the media with an aggravated audience of 7 million Australians. The Campaign featured in 30 radio stations, over 70 local newspapers, major newspapers including The Age and Sun- Herald and featured in major TV programs including 6:30 with George Negus, The Kerri Anne Show and the Today Show.
This is a unique opportunity to work with the fastest growing peer-to-peer fundraiser in Australia.
Job Outline
Oaktree is looking for a highly motivated and passionate individual to undertake the role as the State Manager. This position involves leading the state team, executing grass root operations and working closely with the National Live Below The Line team.
The State Manager will be responsible for leading the state team members to execute:
- Grass root community engagement including: pitching to community groups including universities, schools, faith groups, sports groups, presentations
- Grass root promotions including: organising street teams, collateral distribution, stunts
- Official Live Below The Line events
Also required is:
- Attendance of a 6-week training program (1 contact hour, 2 hours offline) starting in the first week of October.
- Contribution, input and creation of a State Strategy
- Input and participation with the National Team.
Key Performance Indicators
- Quality execution of events
- Quality execution of promotion strategy
- Number of communities engaged with the campaign
Skills required
- Experience volunteering for a campaign / non profit organisation or similar
- Experience in event management
- Excellent written, communication, and verbal skills
- Deadline driven
- High organisational skills
- Creative thinking

Who is Oaktree
The Oaktree Foundation is an aid and development organisation run by young people under the age of 26. We believe that education is the most powerful force we have to change the world. Oaktree takes action by partnering with developing communities to make educational opportunities reality.
In a world where people often only give token responses to poverty, Oaktree believes that young people can be leaders who don't just talk about change but create it. We believe that the key to making lasting change and breaking the poverty cycle is education. At the core of our work are our projects in developing communities. Oaktree partners with local organisations to provide educational opportunities to young people. Currently we support projects in four countries: East Timor, South Africa, Papua New Guinea and Cambodia. In Australia we support our projects through advocacy, fundraising and volunteer mobilisation.
The Story
In 2002, Hugh Evans lived and worked in the rural valley communities of KwaZulul-Natal, South Africa. Here he came to understand that bringing opportunity and hope to the community could only be achieved through a spirit of partnership. In 2003 Hugh and Nicolas Mackay founded The Oaktree Foundation to harness the potential of young people to reduce poverty and empower developing communities through education.
Oaktree grew from young people sitting in living rooms, cafes, school classrooms and church halls throughout Melbourne who were committed to building on this vision. Our first partnership was created with an organisation in South African called Sethani who wanted to build a community resource centre that would provide educational opportunity for 750 orphans and vulnerable children and this success has been replicated many times.
Achievements
Oaktree has had some notable achievements either individually or part of a coalition with other organisations. These include but are not limited to:
- In Australia, we have mobilised more than 10,000 supporters, run more than 300 conferences and speaking engagements and reached more than 150,000 people.
- We were the leaders behind the 2006 Make Poverty History Concert in Melbourne, the 2007 Make PovertyHistory Zero Seven Road Trip and the 2008 End Child Slavery Campaign.
- In 2007 the Oaktree Foundation was presented with the prestigious ‘Free Your Mind' award at the MTV Music Awards.
- By now, Oaktree's Schools 4 Schools program has expanded to over 40 schools across Australia, and is one of the largest programs in the country engaging school students on issues of social justice.
- We currently raise over $500,000 annually to support educational projects in developing communities

Live Below The Line
Live Below The Line (www.livebelowtheline.com) is the annual fundraising campaign that challenges participants to eat off the extreme poverty line of AUS $2 for five days in May, raising awareness and funds for anti-poverty initiatives.
Founded in 2010 the campaign has since engaged over 8000 participants and raised over $2 million dollars for Life Changing Anti-poverty initiatives and in 2011 has expanded to both the United Kingdom and the United States of America.
In 2011 over 6000 Australian participants from over 60 workplaces, 80 universities, 90 schools and over 800 teams completed the challenge where more than 78.1% talked to 20 people or more about the campaign and the issues of extreme poverty. Together they raised over 1.4 million dollars for life changing anti poverty initiatives in some of the poorest regions of Southeast Asia including Cambodia, East Timor and PNG.
Live Below The Line also had a substantial impact in the media with an aggravated audience of 7 million Australians. The Campaign featured in 30 radio stations, over 70 local newspapers, major newspapers including The Age and Sun- Herald and featured in major TV programs including 6:30 with George Negus, The Kerri Anne Show and the Today Show.
This is a unique opportunity to work with the fastest growing peer-to-peer fundraiser in Australia.
Job Outline
Oaktree is looking for a highly motivated and passionate individual to undertake the role as the State Manager. This position involves leading the state team, executing grass root operations and working closely with the National Live Below The Line team.
The State Manager will be responsible for leading the state team members to execute:
- Grass root community engagement including: pitching to community groups including universities, schools, faith groups, sports groups, presentations
- Grass root promotions including: organising street teams, collateral distribution, stunts
- Official Live Below The Line events
Also required is:
- Attendance of a 6-week training program (1 contact hour, 2 hours offline) starting in the first week of October.
- Contribution, input and creation of a State Strategy
- Input and participation with the National Team.

Skills required
- Experience volunteering for a campaign / non profit organisation or similar
- Experience in event management
- Excellent written, communication, and verbal skills

Time Commitment
15 - 20 hours per week
This includes a minimum one-hour meeting with the State Live Below the Line Team, one hour meetings with The National Live Below The Line Leadership Team and State Management Team meetings.
We are looking for individuals who can make a minimum twelve month commitment to the position
