ABOUT THE AYCC AND THE POSITION
Established in early 2007, The Australian Youth Climate Coalition (www.aycc.org.au) unites over 60,000 young Australians and all major Australian youth organisations to build a generation wide movement to solve climate change. We educate, empower, inspire andmobilise young Australians to solve climate change, through short-term political impact and long-term cultural change.
In 2011 Power Shift will be held in Brisbane and Perth, for two inspirational, empowering conferences. Each Power Shift conference will be a three-day event, with high profile keynote addresses from Australia's foremost climate change campaigners, interactive workshops and skills training, media stunts, social events and grassroots movement building!
Power Shift, like the AYCC, is based upon the passion and dedication of volunteers.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- To hold half-hour debriefs for the Power Shift Welfare Volunteers in which the Welfare Volunteers can share their experiences and concerns about supporting the conference participants.
- To relay concerns and ideas that the Welfare Volunteers want to be brought to theattention of the Power Shift organisers.
- To be available for one four hour shift per day during Power Shift to respond to anyrequests for encouragement, emotional support, and comfort from Power Shift participants who are feeling homesick, tired, or upset.
- To send a text message to a group of approximately ten underage Power Shift participants, enquiring about their wellbeing and offering support if needed.
SKILLS
The AYCC recognises that Welfare Volunteers provide essential support for the wellbeing of Power Shift participants, and require their own support network to ensure they aren't worn down by the experience. The Welfare Volunteer Manager must be approachable, reassuring and have a calm, confident manner. They must be able to provide a high level of interpersonal support for their team and make difficult value judgments about private information. Previous
experience working with non-governmental organisations would be advantageous, however, we recognise that the best people may have no formal experience but are quick learners. Applicants must hold, or be willing to obtain, a Working With Children Check.
