YOUth LEADing the World (YLTW) is a bold new initiative from OzGREEN that seeks to accelerate the shift to fair futures by building a movement of inspired leaders. YLTW begins with an annual 3 day youth environmental leadership congress conducted simultaneously in multiple locations, connected by digital media. Innovative workshop techniques combined with social networking and web2.0 technologies focus attention on 3 ways to make a difference:

INFORM: learning to live within the limits of one planet;

INNOVATE: inspiring, innovating and creating social change;

INVOLVE: connecting change makers locally and globally.

OzGREEN piloted YOUth LEADing Australia (YLA) in 7 locations in 2009 with 500 participants. In 2010 it grew into Youth Leading the World (YLTW) in collaboration with over 100 local and regional organisations - involving 1400 participants from 18 regions (13 in Australia and 5 international) and attracting over 60,000 post views on facebook. (See Swan Hill highlights http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tVku90M0Dpo and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lwXSksAHDhk.)

Participants say the most significant outcomes are: • Increased understanding of about climate change and other sustainability challenges (3/10 before to 8/10 after); • Increased personal confidence and leadership capacity (4/10 before to 9/10 after); • Increased connectivity with other change makers locally and globally (2/10 to 9/10) and; • Reduction of ecofootprint - average 50%.

How can I get involved?

1. It's simple really: contact OzGREEN to express your interest! We'll help you with the next steps. In 2010 YLTW was made possible through partnerships with over 100 organisations in 18 locations (13 in Australia, 5 international).

2. Participate in your local congress if there is one already happening in your area. To date we have expressions of interest from the following sites for 2011:

Australia: Sydney (northern, western and southern) , Newcastle, Bellingen, Port Macquarie, Lismore, Armidale, Blue Mountains, Southern Highlands, Albury, Swan Hill, Canberra, Melbourne, Hobart, Adelaide, Perth, Bunbury, Alice Springs, Darwin, Brisbane, Weipa and Cairns.

International: India (Varanasi and Mumbai); East Timor (Oecusse); USA; Malaysia; Guatemala; Costa Rica; ElSalvador; Colombia; Argentina, Mexico; Pakistan; Ghana; Maldive Islands, South Africa, Bangladesh.

3. Organise in your local area - get a group together of local partners and supporters (eg local council / local business/ youth groups / environment groups / schools / university / TAFE). Get a local team of at least 4 people along to the Facilitator and Digital Media Training in Sydney 3-6 October and learn how to facilitate the congress process and connect with facilitators across Australia and the world. Get a venue and promote the congress with potential participants (youth aged 12-28 years).

Facilitator and digital media training in Sydney 3-6 October 2011

Learn how to organise and facilitate YLTW - including measuring eco-footprint, participatory process, digital media skills, strategic questioning, visioning, VIBRANT goals and action planning. The age range for facilitators in 2010 was 14-67 years (school students, Uni and TAFE students, professionals, teachers, mothers, fathers). Some international and interstate facilitators participate via Skype. Cost $600 per person (plus GST for Australians) for a 4 day residential program, including accommodation and meals. Some scholarships, subsidised and free places are available.

Congress Program 29 Nov-1 Dec 2011

DAY 1: Global Challenge: Eco footprint; Pulse of the Planet (update on global sustainability challenges including climate change, biodiversity, food, water, energy, economic, wellbeing); coming to terms with the depth of these challenges; visioning our sustainable community;

DAY 2: Be the Change: Creating change brainstorm: one planet living plan; social innovation for sustainability; sharing ideas in locations around Australia, inspiring local change stories; action planning to achieve vision;

DAY 3: Begin it Now: Youth-led Community Forum for government and local businesses, parents, teachers, principals and the public- designed and run by youth.

INFORM: learning to live within the limits of one planet;

INNOVATE: inspiring, innovating and creating social change;
