Who is OakTree?
The Oaktree Foundation is an aid and development organisation run by young people under the age of 26. We believe that education is the most powerful force we have to change the world.
Oaktree takes action by partnering with developing communities to make educational opportunities reality. We do this by supporting educational projects in developing communities, as well as bringing young people together to campaign on issues of global poverty in the Australian context. In a world where people often only give token responses to poverty, Oaktree believes that young people can be leaders who don’t just talk about change but create it. We believe that the key to making lasting change and breaking the poverty cycle is education.
At the core of our work are our projects in developing communities. Oaktree partners with local organisations to provide educational opportunities to young people. Currently we support projects in four countries: East Timor, South Africa, Papua New Guinea and India. In Australia we support our projects through advocacy, fundraising and volunteer mobilisation.
The Story
In 2002, a young man named Hugh Evans lived and worked in the rural valley communities of KwaZulu‐Natal, South Africa. Here he came to understand that bringing opportunity and hope to the community could only be achieved through a spirit of partnership. In 2003 Hugh and Nicolas Mackay founded The Oaktree Foundation to harness the potential of young people to reduce poverty and empower developing communities through education.
Oaktree grew from young people sitting in living rooms, cafes, school classrooms and church halls throughout Melbourne who were committed to building on this vision. Our first partnership was created with an organisation in South Africa called Sethani who wanted to build a community resource centre that would provide educational opportunity for 750 orphans and vulnerable children and this success has been replicated many times.

Achievements
Oaktree has had some notable achievements either individually or as part of a coalition with other organisations. These include but are not limited to:
- In Australia, we have mobilised more than 10,000 supporters, run more than 300 conferences and speaking engagements and reached more than 150,000 people.
- We were the leaders behind the 2006 Make Poverty History Concert in Melbourne, the 2007 Make Poverty History Zero Seven Road Trip, the 2008 End Child Slavery Campaign and the 2010 Make Poverty istory Road Trip.
- In 2007 the Oaktree Foundationwas presented with the prestigious ‘Free Your Mind’ award at the MTV Music Awards.
- By now, Oaktree’s Schools 4 Schools program has expanded to over 40 schools across Australia, and is one of the largest programs in the country engaging school students on issues of social justice
- We currently raise over $400,000 annually to support educational projects in developing communities Business Development Team
Business Development Team
At Oaktree, we aim to build strategic, mutually beneficial partnerships with businesses. In the past we have partnered with businesses and educational institutions to support our overseas projects, our Australian programs and campaigns, and build the capacity of our volunteers. Corporate sponsorship is vital to ensure we are able to reduce our administrative costs and keep all our donations channelled to our projects. The Business Development Team is responsible for building corporate relationships and managing The Oaktree Foundation’s Future Fund.
Future Fund
With The Oaktree Foundation constantly growing and increasing the scope of its campaigns, the need for financial sustainability is paramount. This initiative aims to raise $3,000,000 to secure and grow our future by providing us with a sustainable funding base and supporting us as volunteers. Future Fund was launched in 2008 with a huge event in Melbourne that raised almost $500,000 in a single night. This was followed up in 2009 with an event that raised $100,000.
The Future Fund project now continues to look for innovative ways to grow this fund, with the plan being for Future Fund events to be held in each state until the target is reached. In Western Australia, Future Fund is still in its infancy and has not yet become well established. In 2011 we will be looking to continue developing relationships and officially setting up the Future Fund.
Job Outline
As a WA Corporate Engagement Officer, you will:
- Assist with building relationships with key businesses
- Pitch to potential sponsors and partners of The Oaktree Foundation
- Work according to the strategic plan for your team’s work
- Assist with the fulfilment of obligations to sponsors
- Create and drive innovative means of raising the Oaktree Foundation’s profile as an organisation committed to ending global poverty
Key Performance Indicators
• Increasing Oaktree’s portfolio of corporate partnerships
• Satisfaction and depth of engagement of corporate partners
• Impact on wider public, indicated by media, events, recognition, relationships
• Achievement of self--‐directed targets
Skills Required
Eligible candidates must possess the following:
- Very good communication and interpersonal skills
- High self--‐motivation, resourcefulness and initiative
- A good work ethic and enthusiasm for working in a team
- Self confidence and professionalism
- Commitment to Oaktree’s values and mission
- Excellent organisation and time--‐management skills
- An understanding of and interest in the corporate world

Who is OakTree?
The Oaktree Foundation is an aid and development organisation run by young people under the age of 26. We believe that education is the most powerful force we have to change the world.
Oaktree takes action by partnering with developing communities to make educational opportunities reality. We do this by supporting educational projects in developing communities, as well as bringing young people together to campaign on issues of global poverty in the Australian context. In a world where people often only give token responses to poverty, Oaktree believes that young people can be leaders who don’t just talk about change but create it. We believe that the key to making lasting change and breaking the poverty cycle is education.
At the core of our work are our projects in developing communities. Oaktree partners with local organisations to provide educational opportunities to young people. Currently we support projects in four countries: East Timor, South Africa, Papua New Guinea and India. In Australia we support our projects through advocacy, fundraising and volunteer mobilisation.
The Story
In 2002, a young man named Hugh Evans lived and worked in the rural valley communities of KwaZulu‐Natal, South Africa. Here he came to understand that bringing opportunity and hope to the community could only be achieved through a spirit of partnership. In 2003 Hugh and Nicolas Mackay founded The Oaktree Foundation to harness the potential of young people to reduce poverty and empower developing communities through education.
Oaktree grew from young people sitting in living rooms, cafes, school classrooms and church halls throughout Melbourne who were committed to building on this vision. Our first partnership was created with an organisation in South Africa called Sethani who wanted to build a community resource centre that would provide educational opportunity for 750 orphans and vulnerable children and this success has been replicated many times.

Achievements
Oaktree has had some notable achievements either individually or as part of a coalition with other organisations. These include but are not limited to:
- In Australia, we have mobilised more than 10,000 supporters, run more than 300 conferences and speaking engagements and reached more than 150,000 people.
- We were the leaders behind the 2006 Make Poverty History Concert in Melbourne, the 2007 Make Poverty History Zero Seven Road Trip, the 2008 End Child Slavery Campaign and the 2010 Make Poverty istory Road Trip.
- In 2007 the Oaktree Foundationwas presented with the prestigious ‘Free Your Mind’ award at the MTV Music Awards.
- By now, Oaktree’s Schools 4 Schools program has expanded to over 40 schools across Australia, and is one of the largest programs in the country engaging school students on issues of social justice
- We currently raise over $400,000 annually to support educational projects in developing communities Business Development Team
Business Development Team
At Oaktree, we aim to build strategic, mutually beneficial partnerships with businesses. In the past we have partnered with businesses and educational institutions to support our overseas projects, our Australian programs and campaigns, and build the capacity of our volunteers. Corporate sponsorship is vital to ensure we are able to reduce our administrative costs and keep all our donations channelled to our projects. The Business Development Team is responsible for building corporate relationships and managing The Oaktree Foundation’s Future Fund.
Future Fund
With The Oaktree Foundation constantly growing and increasing the scope of its campaigns, the need for financial sustainability is paramount. This initiative aims to raise $3,000,000 to secure and grow our future by providing us with a sustainable funding base and supporting us as volunteers. Future Fund was launched in 2008 with a huge event in Melbourne that raised almost $500,000 in a single night. This was followed up in 2009 with an event that raised $100,000.
The Future Fund project now continues to look for innovative ways to grow this fund, with the plan being for Future Fund events to be held in each state until the target is reached. In Western Australia, Future Fund is still in its infancy and has not yet become well established. In 2011 we will be looking to continue developing relationships and officially setting up the Future Fund.
Job Outline
As a WA Corporate Engagement Officer, you will:
- Assist with building relationships with key businesses
- Pitch to potential sponsors and partners of The Oaktree Foundation
- Work according to the strategic plan for your team’s work
- Assist with the fulfilment of obligations to sponsors
- Create and drive innovative means of raising the Oaktree Foundation’s profile as an organisation committed to ending global poverty
Key Performance Indicators
• Increasing Oaktree’s portfolio of corporate partnerships
• Satisfaction and depth of engagement of corporate partners
• Impact on wider public, indicated by media, events, recognition, relationships
• Achievement of self--‐directed targets
Skills Required
Eligible candidates must possess the following:
- Very good communication and interpersonal skills
- High self--‐motivation, resourcefulness and initiative
- A good work ethic and enthusiasm for working in a team
- Self confidence and professionalism
