Position Information Pack

Who is OakTree?
The Oaktree Foundation is an aid and development organisation run by young people under the age of 26. We believe that education is the most powerful force we have to change the world.
Oaktree takes action by partnering with developing communities to make educational opportunities reality. We do this by supporting educational projects in developing communities, as well as bringing young people together to campaign on issues of global poverty in the Australian context. In a world where people often only give token responses to poverty, Oaktree believes that young people can be leaders who don’t just talk about change but create it. We believe that the key to making lasting change and breaking the poverty cycle is education.
At the core of our work are our projects in developing communities. Oaktree partners with local organisations to provide educational opportunities to young people. Currently we support projects in four countries: East Timor, South Africa, Papua New Guinea and India. In Australia we support our projects through advocacy, fundraising and volunteer mobilisation.

The Story
In 2002, a young man named Hugh Evans lived and worked in the rural valley communities of KwaZulu‐Natal, South Africa. Here he came to understand that bringing opportunity and hope to the community could only be achieved through a spirit of partnership. In 2003 Hugh and Nicolas Mackay founded The Oaktree Foundation to harness the potential of young people to reduce poverty and empower developing communities through education.
Oaktree grew from young people sitting in living rooms, cafes, school classrooms and church halls throughout Melbourne who were committed to building on this vision. Our first  partnership was created with an organisation in South Africa called Sethani who wanted to build a community resource centre that would provide educational opportunity for 750 orphans and vulnerable children and this success has been replicated many times.

“The Oaktree Foundation is an outstanding advocate for increasing awareness among young  people  in Australia and overseas of development challenges. Its role in mobilising young people to tackle poverty – and to inspire them to believe that they can make a difference – is commendable.”
The Honourable Kevin Rudd
Minister for Foreign Affairs

Achievements
Oaktree has had some notable achievements either individually or as part of a coalition with other organisations. These include but are not limited to:

  • In  Australia,  we have mobilised more than 10,000 supporters, run more than 300 conferences and speaking engagements and reached more  than 150,000 people.
  • We were the leaders behind the 2006 Make Poverty History Concert in Melbourne, the 2007 Make Poverty History Zero Seven Road Trip, the 2008 End Child Slavery Campaign and the 2010 Make Poverty  History Road Trip.
  • In 2007 the  Oaktree Foundation was  presented with the prestigious ‘Free Your Mind’ award at the MTV Music Awards.
  • By now, Oaktree’s Schools 4  Schools program has expanded to over 40 schools  across Australia, and is one of the largest programs in the country engaging school students on issues of social justice
  • We currently raise over $400,000 annually to support educational projects in developing communities Business Development Team

Communications Team

Within the Communications team, we are looking for four Media and Promotions Officers:

  • Events Media and Promotions Officers x2
  • Campaigns Media and Promotions Officer
  • Programs Media and Promotions Officer

Events
In 2011 the Events team will coordinate the Live Below the Line campaign and the State Annual Fundraiser. Live Below the Line began in 2010 and was a huge success, raising over $470,000 across Australia to support educational programs in Papua New Guinea, Cambodia and here in Australia through the Global Poverty Project. The State Annual Fundraiser also began in 2010, and aims to become as large as events like Prosh and the Red Party, which are must-attend events on Perth’s social (justice) calendar. Promotions for these events will centre on universities, schools, other youth/social justice organisations and the general public.

Campaigns
The Campaigns team is a relatively new part of Oaktree in WA, resulting from the success of the Make Poverty History Road Trip in 2010. The Campaigns team aim to continue the momentum of the Make Poverty History campaign to raise awareness of and commitment to the Millennium Development Goals throughout the community. They organise community forums where political leaders and representatives 3 from various non-government organisations speak about issues of poverty and injustice, raising the will of the Australian public to contribute to poverty alleviation worldwide and raising political pressure on the Australian government to do so. Promotions for this team focus on the general public, universities and other social justice organisations.

Programs
Oaktree runs several programs, including the Schools 4 Schools program, Generate and the Summer Internship. Schools 4 Schools partners schools in Australia with schools in developing communities to increase understanding and opportunities for students. Australian students raise funds to support educational programs that improve their partner

Schools and the opportunities afforded to their students. Currently Schools 4 Schools is partnered with Generation of Leaders Discovered (GOLD) in South Africa, delivering leadership and HIV-prevention training to young leaders at some of the most underprivileged high schools in KwaZulu‐Natal and Mpumalanga. In the future Schools 4 Schools will support the KAPE Beacon Schools program in Cambodia, improving school governance and outreach programs to get more young people into school. Schools 4 Schools promotions focus on high schools and the general public. Generate is The Oaktree Foundation’s universities engagement program. Our facilitators train a group of university students, called Generators, in leadership, event management, and aid and development issues. Generators run fundraising events to raise money for Oaktree’s overseas projects, and become advocates for the Millennium Development Goals. Generate promotions focus on universities. The Summer Internship has been running since 2007. Over the summer holidays, a small group of high school leavers and university students complete projects under the guidance of Oaktree WA’s State Management Team. Summer Interns have typically gone on to hold branch positions and leadership positions. Promotions for the Summer Internship focus on university students and high schools.
