The Australian Youth Climate Coalition
Brisbane Central Recruitment Team Coordinator

A group of passionate young people with good inter-personal and organizing skills, working together to build local climate action and promote the upcoming Power Shift Conference in schools around Brisbane.
LOCATION: Brisbane, Queensland
RESPONSIBLE TO: Deanna Howland (Power Shift National Recruitment Manager)
TIME COMMITMENT: Approximately 12 hours per week (varies), from 20 August to 14 October 2011.
MUST be available for training on Saturday 20 August 2011.
SALARY: This is a volunteer role. Reimbursement is available for associated expenses.

ABOUT THE AYCC
Established in early 2007, The Australian Youth Climate Coalition (www.aycc.org.au) unites over 60,000 young Australians and all major Australian youth organisations to build a generation wide movement to solve climate change. We educate, empower, inspire and mobilise young Australians to solve climate change, through short-term political impact and long-term cultural change.

ABOUT POWER SHIFT
In 2009, the AYCC ran the largest ever youth conference in Australia, the 2009 Sydney Power Shift for 1500 young people. This incredible event kick started a national movement of young people. In 2010, the AYCC took the Power Shift concept on the road, with regional Power Shifts held in Canberra, Adelaide and Geelong for over 500 young people. In 2011 Power Shift returns, this time in Brisbane and Perth, for two inspirational, empowering conferences.
Each Power Shift conference will be a three-day event, with high profile keynote addresses from Australia’s foremost climate change campaigners, interactive workshops and skills training, media stunts, social events and grassroots movement building!

POSITION SUMMARY
We are looking for a highly motivated person to coordinate the Brisbane Central Recruitment Team for Power Shift 2011. This role will involve coordinating a volunteer team and organising actions to promote Power Shift and encourage young people in the Brisbane area to attend.

YOU WILL SUIT THE TEAM IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN -

  • Taking a role within the climate movement in Australia;
  • Engaging and empowering other young people to take action to solve the climate crisis;
  • Working in a team of passionate, fun, and motivated young people.


RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsibilities may include:

  • Locating and booking stalls at local markets, universities, etc.
  • Organising lecture bashing and promotions at local universities
  • Organising leafleting at relevant events and high traffic public areas
  • Booking volunteers for the above actions well in advance, briefing and debriefing them
  • Contacting university groups and asking them to promote Power Shift amongst their members, and organise groups to attend Power Shift 2011
  • Ensuring your team members follow up people they have had contact with at events
  • Promoting Power Shift 2011 on as many local websites as possible
  • Helping organise and run Information nights for local youth and environment groups or speaking at their organisation’s meetings
  • Organising other local promotional activities
  • Delegating and managing responsible volunteers


SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
The Brisbane Central Recruitment Team Coordinator would ideally be able to demonstrate all of the following skills and personal characteristics:

  • Excellent communication skills
  • Demonstrated organizational skills
  • Ability to engage and inspire others
  • Flexible, able to adapt to changes in plans
  • Ability to work independently and show initiative
  • Experience working with and leading a team
  • Experience volunteering or working for a not-for-profit
  • Most importantly, friendly and fun nature!

TIME COMMITMENT: Approximately 12 hours per week (varies), from 20 August to 14 October 2011.
MUST be available for training on Saturday 20 August 2011.

Established in early 2007, The Australian Youth Climate Coalition (www.aycc.org.au) unites over 60,000 young Australians and all major Australian youth organisations to build a generation wide movement to solve climate change. We educate, empower, inspire and mobilise young Australians to solve climate change, through short-term political impact and long-term cultural change.

ABOUT POWER SHIFT
In 2009, the AYCC ran the largest ever youth conference in Australia, the 2009 Sydney Power Shift for 1500 young people. This incredible event kick started a national movement of young people. In 2010, the AYCC took the Power Shift concept on the road, with regional Power Shifts held in Canberra, Adelaide and Geelong for over 500 young people. In 2011 Power Shift returns, this time in Brisbane and Perth, for two inspirational, empowering conferences.
Each Power Shift conference will be a three-day event, with high profile keynote addresses from Australia’s foremost climate change campaigners, interactive workshops and skills training, media stunts, social events and grassroots movement building!

POSITION SUMMARY
We are looking for a highly motivated person to coordinate the Brisbane Central Recruitment Team for Power Shift 2011. This role will involve coordinating a volunteer team and organising actions to promote Power Shift and encourage young people in the Brisbane area to attend.

YOU WILL SUIT THE TEAM IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN -

  • Taking a role within the climate movement in Australia;
  • Engaging and empowering other young people to take action to solve the climate crisis;
  • Working in a team of passionate, fun, and motivated young people.


RESPONSIBILITIES
Responsibilities may include:

  • Locating and booking stalls at local markets, universities, etc.
  • Organising lecture bashing and promotions at local universities
  • Organising leafleting at relevant events and high traffic public areas
  • Booking volunteers for the above actions well in advance, briefing and debriefing them
  • Contacting university groups and asking them to promote Power Shift amongst their members, and organise groups to attend Power Shift 2011
  • Ensuring your team members follow up people they have had contact with at events
  • Promoting Power Shift 2011 on as many local websites as possible
  • Helping organise and run Information nights for local youth and environment groups or speaking at their organisation’s meetings
  • Organising other local promotional activities
  • Delegating and managing responsible volunteers


SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
The Brisbane Central Recruitment Team Coordinator would ideally be able to demonstrate all of the following skills and personal characteristics:

  • Excellent communication skills
  • Demonstrated organizational skills
  • Ability to engage and inspire others
  • Flexible, able to adapt to changes in plans
  • Ability to work independently and show initiative
  • Experience working with and leading a team
  • Experience volunteering or working for a not-for-profit
  • Most importantly, friendly and fun nature!
