Lauren Townsend, TasYAC Executive Officer, on 0404 104 111 or ltownsend@redcross.org.au or Hayley Bester, TasYAC Chair & Divisional Advisory Board Youth Representative, hbester@redcross.org.au

We are seeking applications from young people aged 15 - 25 from across Tasmania to nominate for membership of TasYAC for June 2011 - 2012.

The Tasmanian Youth Advisory Committee is a practical demonstration of Red Cross' commitment to the participation of young people in the structures, processes, debates and environments that shape their lives.  It exists to provide a forum for young people to influence decision making processes and become a youth voice in Red Cross, the largest humanitarian organisation in the world.  TasYAC will develop proposals, campaigns and projects in accordance with the strategic goals of the organisation as well as supporting members to take action and respond to timely issues identified by TasYAC and in consultation with community.

TasYAC also provides advice to Red Cross locally and nationally across a range of key issues and policies.  There are a variety of roles and responsibilities within the committee, with members representing the group on the Red Cross Tasmanian Divisional Advisory Board and on the National Youth Advisory Committee.

In the coming year TasYAC are planning to look at new ways that the YAC can meet, plan and carry out direct humanitarian actions.

In addition, TasYAC will:

  • provide young people with an opportunity for training and skill development
  • strengthen the relationship between young people and humanitarian action
  • provide opportunities for members to represent TasYAC at external events and forums.

As a TasYAC member you will be required to attend and be an active participant in monthly meetings either in person or by phone or Skype, varying in length from 1 - 3 hours and at any other times that may arise due to the demand of a particular project.

We strongly encourage young people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds and from rural and regional Tasmania to nominate.

How to get involved:

If you're interested in nominating yourself, please forward on a brief personal summary and explanation of why you would like to become a TasYAC member to tasyac@redcross.org.au by May 31st.  Applications will be processed after this time and you will be contacted by mid June regarding your application.
